The "loop" charge for the raw DSL circuit from Alltel.com changed July 1st, 2006 to a flat rate of $19.71/month with no promotional pricing during the first year. This will increase the total cost of DSL for new customers during the first year of service. In the past, the renewal rate after the promotional period was 29.95, so this will decrease the total cost of DSL for customers which have been online longer than 12 months.
These changes only affect the raw DSL "pipe" charges which appear on your phone bill from Alltel. Perigee has not changed the pricing for providing its services which make the raw DSL circuit work!
To summarize the important points regarding DSL from Windsream/Alltell:
If you are a Perigee customer, you must be wondering what all the fuss is about. That's because of the multiple levels of firewalls, virus checking and spam control that Perigee customers get with their connection! Our customers just don't have these problems!
Perigee has been working for several months to add a new high-speed circuit to connect to Bellsouth's ATM network and we are pleased to announce that we have completed this project.
This is welcome news for Perigee and its customers. For Perigee, it means we have removed an allocation problem caused by the fact that Bellsouth does not let us multiplex T1's together. With Bellsouth, you must work with multiple T1's (1.544 Mbps) or one or more DS-3's (45 Mbps). The DS-3 allows us the flexibility to offer circuit speeds higher than a T1 and without the problems of trying to allocate DSL circuits to individual T1's!
For our Bellsouth business DSL customers, we are passing on the benefit of the new circuit's capabilities by changing our standard DSL circuit to a full-rate 1.5 Mbps downstream x 256 kbps upstream. Except for large streaming downloads, most people will probably not see much difference in their experience. However, this change will substantially cut the time to download large files. We will also offer additional choices for businesses who need either high upstream rates or higher downstream rates (up to 4 Mbps!). This is typically only for companies needing higher upload speeds so they can host on-site servers or services over their DSL circuit.
The pricing for our 1.5 Mbps x 256 kbps DSL circuit will be $99.95/mo (current cost of basic business circuit). Given the connectivity we have at our facility, this is like having your own private T1. All new Bellsouth circuits will be ordered under the new pricing plan and will be pointed to the new DS-3 high speed circuit.
Existing business DSL circuits can move to the new circuit and the new plan by signing up to re-new your existing contract for another 12 months. If you would like more information, please contact us at 704-849-8355 or email us at: sales@perigee.net.
Even if Perigee does not currently host your company's domain, Perigee's E-knockulate TM email gateway service can block spam and viruses from ever getting to your corporate email server for only $144/year! This service allows a company whose other Internet access services are from other providers to enjoy the spam and virus free email that Perigee's customers already enjoy!
The impact of Viruses and Spam on your corporate network is getting bigger everyday. The cost of buying additional bandwidth, dis-infecting your user's computers and sifting through piles of junk mail continues to mount.
You could go buy a new server and spend thousands of dollars, and way too much time, acquiring, configuring and maintaining the hardware and software to fight these threats. Hmmm. That sounds like fun! Ironically, no matter what you do, you cannot keep viruses and spammers from stealing your bandwidth! When it first started, we were blocking more than 30 Sobig.f viruses a minute each with a 100 kbyte payload on our servers. And that was just Sobig.f!
The best solution is to let us do all the work. By routing your mail through our mail servers, Perigee will block all the viruses AND give you the tools you need to block spam for your whole domain before either ever reaches your mail server! You can even firewall off access to your mail server so the automated programs searching for vulnerable mail servers can't even see your mail server!
You are probably saying, this would be too expensive for us to use. Actually, the opposite is true. It is considerably more expensive to do this in-house. Consider the cost of the server, the cost of the AV scanner and updates, the cost of the spam filter and the labor to keep all of this current. And, of course, that doesn't include the cost of the bandwidth that is being stolen from your company.
We charge $144 per year to "E-knockulate" your email.
Our servers are housed in a carrier class data facility. This means it is a windowless, environmentally controlled area with battery backup and generator power in the event of power failure. In addition, connectivity to internet is insured by peering with multiple, high speed connections to multiple tier 1 internet providers.
Since we are only routing your mail, your mail server or internet connection reliability is not even an issue. If your server goes down for an hour or even a day, the mail will queue up and be delivered when your server comes back online!
So call us today at 704-849-8355 and get this started so you and your company
can start enjoying more productive time at work!
That's right, it makes it look like YOU sent the email with the virus in it!
This does NOT, REPEAT DOES NOT, mean you sent the email or that you have the
virus!!
Here is a link to an article discussing this problem.
Note: Unless you have a NON-PERIGEE email account, it is very unlikely
that you could get this or any other virus. The caveat is if you were
unlucky enough to get the virus during the initial few hours before its
signature was available to our virus scanning engine.
One question we are getting is what spam threshold should you use for your
account. This is addressed in the FAQ, but just be aware that some spam will get
through if you leave the spam threshold set to the default of 7. We felt we
needed to err on the side of caution when we set the default threshold to 7. If
you DO NOT want to get any spam, you'll need to lower this a little. As a first
try, if you are getting spam, we would recommend that you lower the threshold on
your account to 5.
Perigee's New Spam Filter -
Frequently Asked Questions
Spam is really getting bad. If you haven't noticed you are one of the lucky
ones. Our best efforts with our current tools were just not able to stop all of
the spam. Some improvements due to changes in our mail server recently did help,
but they were insufficient to keep up with all the tricks and ploys used by
spammers today. The content of much of this spam is completely inappropriate,
often illegal and this problem is getting worse every day.
Beginning in August, Perigee will be testing and implementing new tools to
try and eliminate spam! The biggest change is that we will be replacing our old
content filtering system with a tool called Spamassassin.
Spamassassin will analyze each piece of mail and apply rules to the message
to determine if it is likely to be spam. Many of the tricks spammers use to try
and get around simpler systems actually now work against the spammer as they add
to the probability that the message is spam.
Additionally, we are going to begin requiring that people sending email into
our mail system have a valid return address. If the email address they use will
not accept mail, then we will no longer accept their mail.
If you are a typical user with a perigee.net mail account, you will
immediately notice a reduction in spam. With the default settings in place, most
spam sent to you will be blocked.
You will also be able to customize your settings and specify how much spam
you want. :-) If you don't want to block any spam, you can turn off Spamassassin
completely or set it to TAG spam. Tagging spam allows you to set up rules in
your mail client to "quarantine" email which Spamassassin believed was spam. You
will also be able to maintain a whitelist of addresses not to block and a
blacklist of addressses to block at all times.
To access these settings, you can surf to:
If you manage a domain, you will be able to manage the default settings for
your domain while still allowing accounts within your domain to override the
settings for their account. You could even disable Spamassassin for your domain
while allowing individuals with email addresses within that domain to re-enable
it.
Perigee.net has upgraded its modems to support the latest modem standard
known as v.92. The two main features supported by this standard are up to 48
kbps upload speed and a feature called Modem On Hold (MOH). MOH allows a user
who has a v.92 modem AND "call waiting" to answer incoming calls while online.
For more information about v.92 advantages, please follow this link on v.92.
The majority of users will probably not be able to detect this change. Existing non v.92 modems
will continue to connect as they normally have. Users with v.92 modems will be
able to take advantage of the new features offered by the v.92 standard. It is
possible that some older modems may experience issues due to this upgrade. We
would encourage everyone to check with their modem manufacturer to verify that
they are using the latest firmware for their modem. Since the new modems will
incorporate fixes and workarounds developed since we last upgraded our modems,
there is a better possibility that users who have experienced intermittent
connection or throughput issues will see an improvement in their connection
quality.

Virus Bounces - Don't get confused by them....
Many new viruses use a random email address as the from line when mass mailing itself to
try and infect other computers. Your email address may be randomly selected from
the infected computer's email address book and so you could get a notification
if the email bounces.
