Welcome to the Windows 95 Internet Dial-Up Networking Tutorial. This tutorial will walk you through the steps needed to use the integral Windows 95 Internet connections. Once you are connected and online, you will be able to use any TCP/IP program you wish, including (but not limited to) email programs, web browsers, telnet and ftp applications, news readers etc. Please read carefully down through these instructions to make sure that you do not miss anything. Computers are not very forgiving of mistakes! Good luck and let us know if you need any assistance.

Step 1: Installing Windows 95 Dial-up Network

Before beginning, check to see if you have a "Dial-Up Networking" icon in your
"My Computer" icon on your desktop. Double click on "My Computer" to find out.
If you do, go to Step 2.

Click HERE to see the screen.

  1. Before starting, you will need your Windows 95 CD, or your Windows 95 original diskettes to complete this Installation.
  2. Click on the START button on your TaskBar.
  3. Click the SETTINGS Icon.
  4. Click on the CONTROL PANEL.
  5. DoubleClick on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS Icon.
  6. Click on the WINDOWS SETUP TAB (It's along the top of the Tab Bars.)
  7. Click on COMMUNICATIONS, then DETAIL.
  8. Check the box labeled DIAL-UP NETWORKING.
  9. Click OK on all the menus back to the Control Panel.
  10. ** Windows 95 will now install the Dial-Up Networking.

Step 2: Installing TCP/IP Networking Protocol

You should only have ONE TCP/IP setting in the "Installed Protocols" box!! If you already have this, go to Step 3! If you have more than one identical TCP/IP installed, click on the bottom one and click the "Remove" button. Follow the instructions below to see if you already have the TCP/IP protocol installed.

  1. Click on the START button on your TaskBar.
  2. Click the SETTINGS Icon.
  3. Click on the CONTROL PANEL.
  4. DoubleClick on the NETWORK Icon.
  5. Check to see if you have the TCP/IP protocol installed.
  6. If you already have this go to step 3.
  7. If you don't, click on ADD, then PROTOCOL, then ADD.
  8. Select MICROSOFT as the manufacturer.
  9. Select the TCP/IP protocol.
  10. Click OK on all the menus back to the Control Panel.
  11. Windows 95 will now install the TCP/IP protocol.

Step 3: Setting up the TCP/IP Protocol

  1. Click on the START button on your TaskBar.
  2. Click the SETTINGS Icon.
  3. Click on the CONTROL PANEL.
  4. DoubleClick on the NETWORK Icon.
  5. Click on TCP/IP, then PROPERTIES.
  6. The first Tab should be IP ADDRESS.
  7. Check the circle labeled "Obtain an IP address automatically"
  8. Click on the GATEWAY tab.(It's near the top, with all the other Tabs)
  9. There should be NO Gateways installed. If are any in either box, click on them and click "Remove"
  10. Click on the DNS tab.
  11. Click on the circle labeled "Disable DNS" All of the options will then "Grey out", this is ok.
  12. Click on the WINS Resolution tab at the top. Set this to "Disable WINS Resolution".
  13. Click OK on all the menus back to the Control Panel.
  14. ** Windows 95 may prompt you to restart your computer, you should do this now.

Step 4: Creating a Dialup connection to Perigee

  1. Double click on your "MY COMPUTER icon.
  2. Double click on the DIAL-UP NETWORKING Icon.
  3. Double click on MAKE NEW CONNECTION
  4. In the TYPE A NAME.. box, enter Perigee.
  5. Select a modem to use in the modem box.
  6. Enter 704 in the AREA CODE box.
  7. Enter the phone number given to you in the TELEPHONE NUMBER box. Please make sure that this is a local phone for your area. If it is not, please call 849-8017 or email support@perigee.net
  8. You should be able to leave the COUNTRY CODE box alone.
  9. Click the FINISH button.
  10. You should now have an icon labeled Perigee in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
  11. Right Click on your Perigee icon, then Click on PROPERTIES.
  12. Click on Server Type.
  13. Set the "Type of Dial Up Server" to "PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet"
  14. In the ALLOWED NETWORK PROTOCOLS box, make certain that ONLY the TCP/IP box is checked.
  15. Click on the button labeled TCP/IP SETTINGS.
  16. Make certain you have SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS enabled.
  17. Click the circle labeled SPECIFY NAME SERVER ADDRESSES.
  18. Enter the DNS Servers as shown. Our DNS servers are 206.229.254.2 and 206.229.254.5.
  19. Make sure that "Use default gateway on remote network" is checked.
  20. Click OK on all the menus back to the Dial-Up Networking Folder.
  21. Right Click on the Perigee icon, then on CREATE SHORTCUT.
  22. Allow Windows 95 to create an icon on your desktop.
  23. You are now ready to log into Perigee.


Logging Into Perigee

  1. Double Click on the Perigee Icon now on your desktop.
  2. You will need to enter your username, password, and click on Connect.
  3. Your computer should now begin logging into Perigee.
  4. Once you are logged in, you can minimize the connection window, and launch any of your Internet programs.
