Publishers of Marion County South Carolina Abstracts of Deeds

Volume One and Volume Two _____________________________________________

These books are produced from the abstracts of Marion County deeds made from the deed books by Lucille Utley. They are edited, indexed and published by Alita W. Sutcliffe.

Family history researchers interested in Marion, Dillon, Florence, Darlington, Georgetown, Horry, Marlboro, & Williamsburg Counties in South Carolina, and Robeson County in North Carolina, will find these books useful for primary source research. Marion Co. was formerly known as Liberty Co.

These records contain references to wills, estates, gifts, grants as early as the 1730s, and deeds (complete with chain of title and adjacent landowners), bills of sale, military bounty lands, and the occasional marriage settlement. Information formerly hidden in the chain of title (such as inheritance of land) comes to light via the Index. Ancestors almost "come alive" in land records. Seeing them in everyday situations can be a rare and wonderful experience. The opportunity of meeting the earlier generations may be here, in these land records. And the aunts, uncles, and cousins - they may be here, too!

These deeds were recorded during the years 1800 to 1823, but they reflect much earlier dates. The earliest transaction is 1756, and several hundred transactions predate 1800. The pre-Revolutionary dates may be of particular interest. And there are references to land grants as early as the 1730s.

Detailed information on each volume appears below.
